Seven hours. Eighteen distilleries. Over thirty different gins. Twenty-eight degrees. Gin-uary Hobart was a fairly epic day.
With the number of Tasmanian gin distilleries pushing 30, it’s a wonder there hasn’t been a gin festival this far Down Under before now (Melbourne gets two)! Luckily a clever cookie called Courtney called it: Tasmanian’s like their gin, and they really really like it when all the gin is in one place. Especially if that gin is surrounded by pretty trees, tasty tacos, and gin-infused donuts.
Plus a cocktail bar. Which is an exceptional thing to have on a 28-degree day.
Sunday: the day of rest, right?
Long mornings, lazy afternoons, and food. Lots and lots of food. For what is Sunday without a feast? And what’s better than a genuine Italian spread; complete with home-style cooking and friendly faces. Food that just oozes love and soul and laughter (not literally, don’t worry).
You’ll find Mio Locale — Italian for ‘My Local’ — on Brunswick St. in Fitzroy’s North, and if you’re looking for that true, family-style Sunday; this is where you’ll find it. At $45 per head, Mio Locale’s long-awaited Sunday Feasts are a four-course set, themed lunch, held…
When I say ‘Braybrook’, what do you think?
Melbournians: probably industrial warehouses, shipping containers and car yards.
Non-Melbourne people: possibly something relating to a donkey or a river which is honestly what I what was thinking as I tapped it into Google Maps (my brain may be wired differently to most).
Either way, delicious pan Asian cuisine is probably not top of your list — UNTIL NOW. INSERT DRAMATIC MUSIC.
Last week I was lucky enough to score an invite to West of Kin’s Winter menu launch dinner and holy cow, Braybook is now on my radar of tasty things. Sister restaurant…
Hey, have you heard of this “Halloween” thing?
It’s not — supposed to be — that big in Australia. Most years I get surprise trick-or-treaters at my door, which sees me rummaging through my kitchen trying to find anything remotely sweet to give these poor kids, most of whom have probably worked on their costumes for weeks only to be turned away from most of the houses they visit. I remember those days well (sorry, Dad).
This year I got to get fully into the Halloween spirit when some extra special VIP tickets to the Day of the Dead Warehouse…
I had a pretty spectacular trip flying up for the Finders Keepers market in Melbourne last weekend. What a market, and what a venue! We spent the better part of five hours just wandering around, drinking in the stalls, music, food and people. I love seeing so many creative people in one place — such an awesome vibe.
Some of my favourites were the fabulous illustrations of Laura Blythman and Little Quarters, the beautiful textiles of Secret River and the delicious New Orleans & Louisiana street food of Gumbo Kitchen (deep-fried cheese croquettes, hnng).
The next Melbourne Finders Keepers is on…
What a weekend! I have the best job. My totally babein’ boss whisked me away to Melbourne for a few days of excellent wedding fair inspiration at One Fine Day, plus some shopping and my first ever trip to IKEA (I know, right).
We met some wonderful new people and saw more than a few familiar faces! The Abbotsford Convent is a spectacular venue, full of beautiful old rooms with high ceilings. We attended both days — the Friday night session plus the Saturday daytime, and both were full of excellently creative bits and pieces. Very, very cool event. Great…
