Meet the Maker: Maggie May

Was it really all the way back in April that I first met macrame marvel Maggie May? Six whole months?

I fell in love with Maggie’s spirit and passion for her craft immediately, and she continues to inspire me almost daily with her amazing work and open heart, and of course those adorable kittens.

A regular little feature on the many, many people I find ridiculously cool and creative has been on the cards for almost as long as the ‘Spoon has been (metaphorically) alive and kicking, and I couldn’t think of a better person to begin with than Maggie.

I…

The Art of Shibori (part two)

— Missed part one? You’ll find it here! —

After Meg’s demonstarations in the shed, we headed back up into the warmth (courtesy of the aforementioned adorable potbelly wood heater) to start stitching, tying and folding our own shibori creations — and LUNCH.

As well as being an amazing architect and stylist, it turns out Natasha also harbours an incredible talent for cooking. I had a bit of inkling thanks to that delicious morning tea orange and almond cake — which I still have yet to attempt myself — but holy cow; as the food was brought up to the…

The Art of Shibori (part one)

I’m in love! I’m in love. I’m in love with the art of shibori. Also with a house.

If you follow the ‘Spoon on Snapchat or Instagram you’ve probably already seen a few shibori- and house-themed snaps and posts over the last week, and I’m sure you can see where my love has stemmed from.

Last weekend I mini-road-tripped up to Oak and Monkey Puzzle to learn the art of shibori from dyeing extraordinaire Margaret-Anne Gooch, who also turned out to be one of the sweetest people ever! The workshop was put together and hosted by the equally sweet Natasha…

West of Kin VIP Winter Menu Launch

When I say ‘Braybrook’, what do you think?

Melbournians: probably industrial warehouses, shipping containers and car yards.
Non-Melbourne people: possibly something relating to a donkey or a river which is honestly what I what was thinking as I tapped it into Google Maps (my brain may be wired differently to most).

Either way, delicious pan Asian cuisine is probably not top of your list — UNTIL NOW. INSERT DRAMATIC MUSIC.

Last week I was lucky enough to score an invite to West of Kin’s Winter menu launch dinner and holy cow, Braybook is now on my radar of tasty things. Sister restaurant…

Trunk Town Garden Drinks in Summer

Do you like gardens? Pretty lights? Eating and drinking in gardens with pretty lights?

(Of course you do, who doesn’t? What a silly question)

If you’re Melbourne-bound and looking for a place fitting the above description — you’re in luck. Trunk just happens to have the biggest Beer Garden in Melbourne, and it’s right in the heart of the CBD. It’s also home of some delicious Mediterranean food and insanely spectacular cocktails, which we happened to discover on our visit there last week.

It’s the kind of place you might head to in the middle of the afternoon for a late lunch……

Day of the Dead Warehouse Project

Hey, have you heard of this “Halloween” thing?

It’s not — supposed to be — that big in Australia. Most years I get surprise trick-or-treaters at my door, which sees me rummaging through my kitchen trying to find anything remotely sweet to give these poor kids, most of whom have probably worked on their costumes for weeks only to be turned away from most of the houses they visit. I remember those days well (sorry, Dad).

This year I got to get fully into the Halloween spirit when some extra special VIP tickets to the Day of the Dead Warehouse…

The Californian Redwoods

Oh, how I love me some adventurin’.

We’ve been having a lot of fun exploring our new little state! It’s quite a novelty for us to be able to drive in one direction for more than a couple of hours and not end up in the water — coming from Tasmania and all — and the fact that we can drive to a different state altogether is even weirder.

This week’s adventure saw us travelling about three hours outside of Melbourne to the Otway Ranges, on the hunt for some totally enormous Californian redwoods. It’s a lovely drive with…
