Fiddle + Spoon | Colonel Tan's

Attention fellow Melbournians, Australians and food-lovers. There’s a super cool new thing in town, and you’re going to love it.

(I apologise in advance for making you hungry)

The Hood Food Guide is your new staple for eating in the city. They publish entertaining, honest, and short videos of the best food in Melbourne, as decided by the suburb’s top chefs. Who better to take you on a virtual tour of the area than a local β€” and a professional foodie at that!

The first episode is out, and it’s totally fantastic. Nick Coulter, co-owner of Hanoi Hannah, Saigon Sally & Tokyo Tina, shows off the best spots in his neighbourhood of Windsor (which is incidentally our go-to place for finding delicious things to eat). Colonel Tan’s was Nick’s pick for dinner β€” seen here at @3:54 β€” and was our #1 must-try. Thai food with an American diner atmosphere? Um, yes please.

Located inside the Revolver Upstairs complex on Chapel Street, you’ll be feeling the funky Americana vibe the minute you walk through the door. It’s a dark and cosy, welcoming, and oh-so decidedly cool space that will have you stalling on the stairs while drinking in the atmosphere.

Once you’ve made your way upstairs you’ll have some big decisions to make β€” do you want to sit around one of the coffee tables, sinking into the cosy couches and plush armchairs? Or would you prefer being closer to the bar, at one of the diner-style tables with the totally cool table cloths? Choose wisely!

Our pick was the latter, and it was the perfect place to spread out and admire our delicious Thai feast.

We were warmly welcomed by the lovely and totally babein’ restaurant manager Nikki (watch for her cameo in HFG’s episode at @4:49!) who brought us menus and recommended some favourite dishes. The food is tapas style and best shared, so we ordered the satay sauce + roti bread; stir fried pork belly, kaffir lime + red curry; fried egg, broccoli, seeds, avocado + rice salad; deep fried chilli squid + sweet chilli sauce; and roasted duck, snowpea + young coconut salad, which was an insane amount of food for two people, but you better believe we scoffed the lot.

Plus a couple of cocktails, because, well, cocktails.

The food was just as incredible as it looked, and we had such a brilliant time hanging out at Colonel Tan’s for a few hours. Nick Coulter’s advice was totally on point and it makes me super keen to try the rest of his suggestions. I fully recommend checking out the Hood Food Guide β€” scroll to the bottom of this post to watch the first episode if you haven’t already β€” and I guarantee you’ll find a new hidden gem in the city you think you know so well!
